The Old Heart – 4

Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place for the sole of your foot. There the LORD will give you an anxious mind, eyes weary with longing, and a despairing heart.

Such people feed on ashes, a deluded heart misleads them; they cannot save themselves.

This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “In the pride of your heart you say, ‘I am a god; I sit on the throne of a god in the heart of the seas.’ But you are a mortal and not a god, though you think you are as wise as a god. …  because of your wealth your heart has grown proud.”

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

But as for those whose hearts are devoted to their vile images and detestable idols, I will bring down on their own heads what they have done, declares the Sovereign Lord.

You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. … evil people bring evil things out of the evil stored up in them. But I tell you that people will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.

The terror you inspire and the pride of your heart have deceived you.
